Seeds pack life lessons

Like any hobby, gardening often reminds us of other parts of our lives. It’s easy to discover the hidden layers of meaning in our daily activities as long as we have an open mindset and we are conscious of their connections to something deeper.

Take your daily jog, for example, it is easy to relate each mile you passed on the treadmill or jogging path to your life's milestones. Sometimes, it is just too easy to connect the dots. Just like Socrates said, the unexamined life is a life not worth living. The same opportunity for deeper self-awareness and self-discovery is found in such pleasant home outdoor activities like gardening. In fact, planting seeds imparts many lessons that resonate deeply in a well-examined life.

For example, the timing of seed planting is important. You have to pick the right time, you have to pay attention to the conditions, and you have to pick the right seeds. This can easily apply to picking a spouse or starting a new business venture. Any decision, really, needs the right circumstances in order to lead to good results. Also, make sure you create the right space for your seeds or your plant won't grow. This is also true for well-laid career plans or even our romantic lives. New relationships and new careers won't flourish if they are choked or hemmed in by past relationships and hang ups or bad habit from past jobs.
